Orkut hacked..."Bom Sabado" virus infecting orkut profiles.

first twitter , then facebook and today its orkut hacked.
All these social networking sites who claim that they are very secure have been hacked in past one week. Many are calling it the orkut virus.
This time orkut has been made the target with a profile scrap virus called "bom sabado"(means good saturday). Its spreading from profile to profile. It is a link and is automatically sending itself
from ones list to another and has infected thousands of profiles in India and Brazil.

>> Immidiately clear your browser cookie because its a cookie stealing virus so immideately clear your browser cookies.

>>Gone are the days when you have to click any link to get your account hacked. there are chances that even if you open your scrapbook then also your account can be hacked. So better keep away from orkut atleast till today(25.9.2010).

>>change your password if you have logged into orkut since yesterday(24.9.2010) because there are chances of somthing even worse to happen.

>> Unjoin any community that sends automatic scraps to your friends because this can help the virus to spread to other profiles in your friendlist too.

>>If you find your account hacked, dont panic , revert back to the older orkut layout and unjoin any brazilian community or multiple scrap sending community.

There are still no official reports from the orkut owner google. The code is a javascript that has a hidden iframe tag which is enabling it to steal the cokkie sessions.
Its highly recomended to not to open your orkut account until this script is disabled by orkut.

Is Facebook hacked??? 24.9.2010

First there was very slow response from the server. When i pinged the address there was a very delayed response.
Now the DNS error suggest that the servers have been shut temporarily. Any malicious activity has not yet been reported but the are possibilities of hacks. Facebook has recently faced numerous bug problems .Seems this time they have been hit hard.
A day ago it was twitter which was compromised through a loop hole in the mouseover script, today its been facebook who has been targeted.
The two biggest social networking sites are compromised in such short time, seems the social network is not any more social.

How to remove computer viruses manually??

While installing a new software, while downloading a file from the internet , while plugging a USB device , while opening a malicious website and adding numerous other while's ...what we fear the most is --"does it have a virus"?
Probably its the most scary term for the computer users around the globe and every computer user has some way or the other encountered with it. We install numerous anti viruses to protect our systems but still we find ourselves in trouble numerous times. I myself have to tackle with them almost every week.
Its important to know that no anti virus can give you full protection so until you yourself dont knw some defences you cannot keep yourself safe.
We relay so much on our anti viruses but we hardly know that these anti viruses have so many loop holes that present virus designers are now targeting to infect the computer systems.
Let me give you an example, i personally use Kaspersky  anti virus and i recently discovered a loop hole in it that when the updater is updating the anti virus database from the internet then the scanner stops scanning the files until the download process is not complete. Even though it was the best antivirus of 2009 still it had such a major loophole. I mailed to the Kspersky labs about this bug and it got fixed in the next virus update definition.
There can be numerous other such loopholes that may exist and can be exploited so we must know some other countermeasures too.
Let me first give you some brief knowledge about computer viruses.

WHAT IS A COMPUTER VIRUS?
Vital Information Resource Under Seize .
Computer viruses are small software programs that are designed to spread from one computer to another and to interfere with computer operation.A virus might corrupt or delete data on your computer, use your e-mail program to spread itself to other computers, or even erase everything on your hard disk.Computer viruses are often spread by attachments in e-mail messages or instant messaging messages. That is why it is essential that you never open e-mail attachments unless you know who it's from and you are expecting it.
Viruses can be disguised as attachments of funny images, greeting cards, or audio and video files. Computer viruses also spread through downloads on the Internet. They can be hidden in illicit software or other files or programs you might download. They can exist in numerous forms like backdoors, worms , trojans ,rootkits etc.

Indication of Virus:

1. When you plugin a drive, Some Autoplay feature polls you to select a option. If you see a folder like icon that reads open using the program provided on the device. Does not select that. Also does not select Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer. Since the virus can execute with these options. Cancel it.
Note: Windows 7 has disabled the autorun Option for flash drives since the autorun source is usually unknown.

2. You will also see a folder like icon instead of Flash Drive Icon in my computer

Removal of Virus from flash drives without running them:

1. In Start Menu Click RUN and then type cmd. Type your Flash Drive Letter followed with colon. Here
J:
type attrib -r -a -s -h *.* and press enter.
This will unhide all files.

2.  Correct Way of Opening Flash Drives

Note: Do not open the Flash Drive by double clicking the icon in my Computer or By Right clicking and then Open,Explorer
Open the USB drive by using Folders Icon. How to Manually Remove Virus From USB Flash Drive without Formatting
Click on the Folders icon then select your Flash Drive

You can select Your Flash Drive by using the Address Bar in Windows Explorer.

OR
Type your Drive letter in the Address Bar

3. After Opening the drive. Select Details View using this icon How to Manually Remove Virus From USB Flash Drive without Formatting

You can now see what the virus does with your Flash Drive. The Virus does disguises itself as folder. You can see that system file icon as illustrated here is similar to folder icon. You actually click on the file.
Actually you click on those virus file thinking of them as folder and the virus executes. In the detailed view you can clearly see that the system file has a Type description of application and the system folder has a Type description of Folder.
Delete all such files. Carefully do not delete the folders.
4. Delete the Autorun.inf file

5. You can also delete these files using 7-ZIP. Since it shows such virus files as havingapplication file icon.

Removing virus from the hard drive:
there can be no fixed way to remove a virus from the hard disk. Depending on the nature of the viruses the processes may change. Check your task manager to see if any malicious task is running or not, if you find any such task then locate its installed directory by right clicking on the selected task.
Dont delete it. Restart your computer in Safe mode and then go to that location to delete that file.
ARE YOU DONE?  Not yet you still need to delete the registries that have been modified by the virus. Go to the start menu, click on run , type there regedit.
You might be unable to RegEdit, because the virus blocks the doorway. In this case, you need to bring up your Windows in Safe Mode to run the RegEdit. Sometimes, you need to login the Administrator account. Therefore, make sure you know your Administrator account's password when you own the new computer.
Microsoft System Configuration Utility MSConfig.exe keeps entries of Start-Up programs. Besides that, System Registry has RunRunOnce and RunOnceEx entry nodes to manage which program can run while Windows is starting.
First, you should check any starting programs inside the HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Go down to the node in HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion, then look for program entry inside the Run, RunOnce and RunOnceEX. If you find something you don't know, then you type the program name .exe name into the following Search box to find out what's that. If the .exe name is the virus or spyware, then you can delete it.
It's same that you need to check any starting program inside the HEKY_CURRENT_USER.

Go down to the node in HEKY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion, then look for unwanted .exe programs inside the Run, RunOnce and RunOnceEX. If you find something, then delete them.
Some virus will restore the entry later or reboot, even you delete the entry from System Registry Editor. Those virus needs special tools to kill them.

The problem arises when you cannot find the application runing in the task manager. To remove such viruses you need to unhide all the hidden files and folders and then manually make a search in the c:\windows folder .
Then reboot your computer in safe mode . Then run msconfig.exe. Search for the malicious application running at startup. Unmark it and reboot your computer . Check weather the problem now persists or not.
There are different levels at which we can tackle with viruses manually. These are just an overviews of what can be done. You can search for lot more hidden ways to eliminate viruses manually.

Strange as it may sound, the computer virus is something of an Information Age marvel. On one hand, viruses show us how vulnerable we are -- a properly engineered virus can have a devastating effect, disrupting productivity and doing billions of dollars in damages. On the other hand, they show us how sophisticated and interconnected human beings have become.
Thanks for reading.Comments and critics are always welcome.

THE GREAT "WALL" OF FACEBOOK.The social network's plan to dominate the web.

If the great wall of china is the only man made structure that is visible from moon then the “great wall of facebook” is the only visible wall of the social networking that is now ruling the web .

Its like an another web which now holds the profile of around 9%(500 million users) of the total world population and around 30% of the internet users population. Most intrestingly, if facebook would have been a country then it would have been the seventh most populated country in the world.

These interesting stats are enough to boil the head of google CEO Larry Page. It was the fall of 2007, and google co founder was in the middle of a five-day tour of his company's European operations in Zurich, London, Oxford, and Dublin. The trip had been fun, a chance to get a ground-floor look at Google's ever-expanding empire. But this week had been particularly exciting, for reasons that had nothing to do with Europe; Google was planning a major investment in Facebook, the hottest new company in Silicon Valley.

Originally Google had considered acquiring Facebook—a prospect that held no interest for Facebook's executives—but an investment was another enticing option, aligning the Internet's two most important companies. Facebook was more than a fast-growing social network. It was, potentially, an enormous source of personal data. Internet users behaved differently on Facebook than anywhere else online: They used their real names, connected with their real friends, linked to their real email addresses, and shared their real thoughts, tastes, and news. Google, on the other hand, knew relatively little about most of its users other than their search histories and some browsing activity.

But now, as Page took his seat on the Google jet for the two-hour flight from Zurich to London, something appeared to be wrong. He looked annoyed, one of his fellow passengers recalls. It turned out that he had just received word that the deal was off. Microsoft, Google's sworn enemy, would be making the investment instead—for a 1.6 percent stake in the company, meaning that Redmond valued Facebook at an astonishing $15 billion.

FACEBOOK PLANS TO RULE THE WEB :

Can facebook knock google out ?
This is a big question. The reason that facebook is considered to be the next google of the decade is that it has now captured a position from where it can easily target the giants.
To understand the difference between google and facebook let me give you an example- my friend Deepak agarwal is a regular user of both facebook and google.
When i view him on facebook then the profile gives me a lot of personal information related to him like date of birth, hobbies, links he is sharing etc.

Now when i search for him on google then the only information that i get is that he is a student of Engineering from N.I.E.T college and some other links to his various profiles that he has created on various other networking sites.

What i am trying to explain here is that google doesnot hold enough information about its users compared to facebook. If i am a facebook fan of "Brad Pitt" and i search for "hot celebs" in facebook then facebook will give me the top search results based on Brad pitt. This will not be the case when i search in google.
Hence google has lost a big ground to facebook with respect to the amount of information they hold about there users. The reason for the popularity of facebook largly has been because the users tend to behave quiet originally on facebook.

Facebook isn't just kneecapping Google's search engine; it is also competing with it. Facebook encourages its 500 million members to use Microsoft's search engine, which it installed on its homepage late last year as part of the deal struck between the two companies. At press time, it was also planning to launch Facebook Search, allowing users to scour one another's feeds. Want to see what some anonymous user thought about the IPL finale? Check out Google. Want to see what your friends had to say? Try Facebook Search. And it will not only be for searching within Facebook. Because Facebook friends post links to outside sites, you will be able to use it as a gateway to the Web—making it a direct threat to Google. Why settle for articles about the Iraq War that the Google News algorithm recommends when you can read what your friends suggest? Already, Facebook is starting to horn in on Google's role as the predominant driver of Web traffic. According to Hitwise, Facebook in recent months has sent more traffic than Google to Evite, video site Tagged.com, and gossip mills Perez Hilton.com and Dlisted. That trend should only grow with the advent of Facebook Search.

Mark Zuckerberg is notoriously cocky, even by the standards of Silicon Valley. Two years ago, he walked away from a reported nearly $1 billion offer from Yahoo for his company. He could have sold to Google or Microsoft for a lot more. His business cards once famously read: " i'm ceo ... bitch ". And he has described Facebook as a once-in-a-century communications revolution, implying that he is right up there with Gutenberg and Marconi.
Still, you'd think he might play it a little cool when discussing Google, not wanting to antagonize the most powerful company on the Internet. But Zuckerberg doesn't pull any punches, describing Google as "a top-down way" of organizing the Web that results in an impersonal experience that stifles online activity. "You have a bunch of machines and algorithms going out and crawling the Web and bringing information back," he says. "That only gets stuff that is publicly available to everyone. And it doesn't give people the control that they need to be really comfortable." Instead, he says, Internet users will share more data when they are allowed to decide which information they make public and which they keep private. "No one wants to live in a surveillance society," Zuckerberg adds, "which, if you take that to its extreme, could be where Google is going."

BRAND ADS-- The money game.

Facebook can sell ads beyond its own site. Just as Google's AdSense program sells ads on any participating Web site, Connect and Open Stream will eventually push Facebook-brokered advertising to any member site or app. But unlike with AdSense, Facebook's ads could be exquisitely tailored to their targets. "No one out there has the data that we have," says COO Sandberg.

That's where the big-budget brand advertisers come in. Google has courted them for four years, to no avail. That's because, while search ads are great at delivering advertising to users who are seeking specific products, they are less effective at creating demand for stuff users don't yet know they want. Google has tried everything to lure brand advertisers—from buying and selling radio ads to purchasing YouTube. And it is easy to see why it keeps trying. Today, global online brand advertising accounts for just $50 billion a year. Offline brand advertising, meanwhile, accounts for an estimated $500 billion.

Google's desire to crack the brand-advertising conundrum is so intense, some company executives have even considered swallowing their pride and pursuing another deal with Facebook. But whether or not it ultimately friends the social network, Google has clearly been influenced by it. On December 4, the same day that Facebook Connect launched, Google unveiled its own version, Friend Connect, which allows Web sites to link to accounts on any of the major social networks—including MySpace, LinkedIn, Ning, Hi5, and Bebo. In March, four months after Facebook reportedly offered $500 million in a failed bid for Twitter, reports surfaced that Google was holding similar talks. (A Google insider confirms the discussions.) It is easy to see the appeal: Twitter is growing even faster than Facebook—doubling its membership in March—and would give Google access to the kind of personal information that fills Facebook News Feeds. And Google recently announced Wave, a Web communications platform that encourages Facebook-like sharing and conversations. The company even seems to have conceded Zuckerberg's point about its impersonal search results. In April, Google announced a plan to allow individuals to create detailed profiles that would show up whenever anyone searches for their name. If they opt for this service—a big if—users gain greater control over how they are portrayed online, which will give them the incentive to share with Google the kind of personal information they had previously shared only with Facebook.

Zuckerberg's youth has given Googlers some confidence. After all, even under the most sage and steady leadership, Facebook would be confronted with a difficult challenge: turning a massive user base into a sustainable business. (Just ask Friendster, MySpace, YouTube, and Twitter.) Through Google's own experience with YouTube, they have seen how expensive it can be to keep up with exploding user growth. They inked a disastrous $900 million partnership with MySpace in 2006, a failure that taught them how hard it is to make money from social networking. And privately, they don't think Facebook's staff has the brainpower to succeed where they have failed. "If they found a way to monetize all of a sudden, sure, that would be a problem," says one highly placed Google executive. "But they're not going to."
Facebook's naysayers have a point. But before they get too complacent, they might remember another upstart that figured out a new way to organize the Internet. For five years, it worked on building its user base and perfecting its product, resisting pleas from venture capitalists to figure out how to make money. It was only after it had made itself an essential part of everyone's online life that its business path became clear—and it quickly grew to become one of the world's most powerful and wealthy companies. The name of that company, of course, was Google.

INDIA vs PAKISTAN Cyber War.

We all are aware of the wars India and Pakistan have fought and the resulted destruction especially precious human lives. In the current information age, some battles are not only fought with guns and tanks but also through media, internet and pen. Since the advent of Information Technology among the masses of South Asia in mid 1990s, the pace of cyber wars between Pakistan and India have also been increased.

Cyberwars between the two countries started in May 1998, when India conducted its nuclear tests. Soon after India officially announced the test, a group of Pakistan-based hackers called milw0rm broke into the Bhabha Atomic Research Center web site and posted anti-India and anti-nuclear messages. The cyberwars usually have been limited to defacements of each others' sites. Defacement is a low level damage, in which only the home page of a site is replaced with hacker's own page, usually with some message for the victim. Such defacements started in May 1998 and continued during Kargil War in 1999 and then during that era when the tension between India and Pakistan was at its peak from Dec 2001 to 2002. Therefore, the period between 1999 to 2002 was very crucial, when the troops were busy across the LOC exchanging gunshots and the hackers busy in defacing sites of each others.

According to attrition.org, a web site that tracks computer security related developments on the internet, show that attacks on Indian websites increased from 4 in 1999 to 72 in 2000 where as the Pakistani websites were hacked 7 times in 1999 and 18 times in 2000. During the first half of 2001, 150 Indian websites were defaced.

During Kargil war, the first Indian site reported to be hacked was http://www.armyinkashmir.com, established by the Indian government to provide factual information about daily events in the Kashmir Valley. The hackers posted photographs showing Indian military forces allegedly killing Kashmiri militants. The pictures sported captions like 'Massacre,' Torture,' 'Extrajudicial execution' and 'The agony of crackdown' and blamed the Indian government for its alleged atrocities in Kashmir. That was followed by defacement of numerous Indian governmental sites and reciprocal attacks on Pakistani sites.

Two prominent Pakistani hacker groups are PHC (Pakistan Hackers Club) and G-Force. The founder of PHC is Dr. Nuker. The US Department of Justice has identified "Doctor Nuker" as Misbah Khan of Karachi. Misbah Khan was involved in defacement of the official site of AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee). Doctor Nuker struck back with an interview to a magazine Newsbytes where he claimed that the 'federal grand jury made a mistake in indicting Misbah Khan of Karachi' and that 'he merely uses insecure servers in Pakistan to get online anonymously'. Doctor Nuker has been featured in international publications including Time and Newsweek.

G-Force is based in Lahore and it consists of eight members. Both Pakistan Hackers Club and G-Force are professional hackers with a specific aim: to work for the cause of Kashmir and Palestine. It is still to be seen how their hackings are helping the cause of Palestine or Kashmir! Pakistan Hackers Club has been around since quite long and apart from Indian site, they have defaced many USA and Israeli sites including US Department of Energy's site. G-Force was founded in May 1999 after the nuclear tests and their initial target was Indian sites but after 9/11, their concentration has been shifted to US-based sites. According to zone-h.org, G-Force has successfully defaced 212 sites. G-Force's "achievements" includes National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency and three military sites associated with the US Defence Test and Evaluation Professional Institute.

During this cyberwar, in December 2000, a wired.com news story created waves that claimed that an Indian hacker's group "Patriotic Indians" has defaced the official site of Pakistani government pakgov.org. Later, it was revealed that the actual site of Pakistani government is pak.gov.pk, not pakgov.org and pakgov.org was in fact registered by the alleged hacker himself with fake information.

On the Indian side, there are various hackers groups that have defaced Pakistani sites. Among them, the most famous one is H2O or the Hindustan Hackers Organization. However, the independent as well as Indian analysts admit that at this cyber-front, Pakistan has always been winning this war. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, Pakistani hackers are organized in groups where as most of the Indian hackers are working as solo. Secondly and the most important reason is the religious motivation of the hackers based in Pakistan, to do something for the cause of Muslim brothers & sisters in Palestine and Kashmir.

If fighting with our neighbours is in our genes, we can fight through the internet, media, newspapers and books but let us not fight with guns and missiles. There may be humiliation if a website is defaced but at least no human life is lost.
